9: EDGAR Next

EDGAR Next is the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commissions (SEC) modernization initiative aimed at enhancing the security, transparency, and efficiency of its Electronic Data Gathering, Analysis, and Retrieval (EDGAR) system by requiring individual Login.gov credentials with multifactor authentication, introducing role-based account management, and offering optional APIs for automated filings.

EDGAR Next for current SEC filers

If you are a current SEC filer, expect the following major changes after transitioning to EDGAR Next:

  • The way you log into an EDGAR website is different. In legacy EDGAR, you logged in with a CIK and password. In EDGAR Next, you log in with Login.gov, which requires 2-factor authentication (e.g., a code sent via text to your cell phone).
  • In legacy EDGAR, anybody having a company’s CIK and password could log into and manage the company’s EDGAR account. In EDGAR Next, a company needs to designate Account Administrator(s), and only they can log into and manage the company’s account using their own individual Login.gov credentials.
  • In legacy EDGAR, any third party having a company’s CIK and CCC code could submit a filing on behalf of the company. In EDGAR Next, a third party requires the company’s CIK and CCC code, as well as a formal delegation from the company’s Account Administrator before it can submit a filing for the company.
